BEFORE INSTALLATION
To make your hardwood flooring look great now and for a long time to come, proper installation is critical. Here are some of the details to discuss with us:
Current flooring
Our sales professional will evaluate your floor and sub floor construction and will know whether to remove the existing flooring or install on top of it. If it’s removed, the installer knows how much preparation is needed for the sub floor—like use of a leveling compound.
Moisture testing
Proper moisture testing of the sub floor is required so floors won’t cup, buckle, or develop gaps later. Your sales professional will take moisture readings by performing a calcium chloride test to determine the amount of moisture emitted by your slab to determine the proper adhesive required. This test is placed directly to the slab and remains there for up to 72 hours. The Calcium Chloride test is required by most hardwood flooring brands for your warranty to be valid.
Acclimation
Some hardwoods require acclimation in your home, while others are made so that acclimation is not necessary. Your sales professional will advise you according to the brand of flooring you select.
Installation
Using the proper equipment, your installer will nail or glue boards in place, working from multiple cartons to create consistency in the look of the floor. When encountering unforeseen problems, our experienced installers know how to solve them.
Installation Design
Generally hardwoods should run parallel with the longest wall to create the appearance that the room is larger. Talk to your sales professional about what direction is right for your space. We offer lots of design options including borders, inlays or if you can’t decide what direction to run it we can install on a diagonal.
What to do before the Installer arrives
- To ensure a problem free installation here’s a checklist of things to do before the installer arrives.
- Remove as many small items from the room as possible. Be sure to place the removed items in an area away from the rooms to be installed..
- Clear all desk, dresser, and counter tops. If possible remove the drawers from these items.
- Remove all items from bookcases, China cabinets, and entertainment units.
- In closets, clear everything off the floor and anything that hangs lower than two feet from the floor.
- Unhook all electronic equipment including television sets, computers, stereo equipment, and gaming consoles.
- Remove all sheets from beds.
- Secure your pets in a closed room that does not need to be accessed or secure them in the backyard.
- Paint first. If you’re planning to paint, wallpaper, or do any other remodeling in the room, it’s best to do it before your hardwood is installed. Keep extra paint to touch up any post-installation nicks.
